Smoke detectors and carbon detectors are required by law in all homes. They are your first defense in case of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Hard wired are the best as they are integrated together so it doesn’t matter where the alarm goes off they will all go off. If there were a problem in your basement and you were on the second floor you may not hear it. New homes are wired this way and it is for safety sake that they are. If you are remodeling your home this is a good time to think about upgrading the smoke and carbon detectors.
